Tip #1: Make a checklist

Making a checklist is likely one of the most important moving day tips we could share. Moving related tasks have a way of piling up and making for a very stressful experience. Creating a list of all the things you need to do before your moving day can make the process a lot less overwhelming.

If you aren’t sure where to start, or what exactly needs to be done, there are a ton of free moving day checklist mobile apps and lists online to help you!

Tip #2: Pack before moving day

Packing is a lot more time consuming than you might think, so try to do most of your packing in the days leading up to moving day.

We understand that there are some items that will need to be packed on the day of, such as toiletries, sheets, towels, and kitchen utensils — so be sure to leave a few boxes for those items.

Bonus tip: Be sure to label your boxes as you’re packing. This will make your life so much easier when you’re unpacking in your new home!

Tip #3: Set aside your essentials and personal items

Some items, such as medications, jewelry, important documents, and valuables should be kept in a separate “go” bag that only you will handle and keep with you during your moving process.

Be sure to collect these items before moving day so that none of your essentials are lost in the hustle and bustle of the moving process.

Tip #4: Wear appropriate clothes

Moving is a lot of work, so you should wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

We also recommend avoiding clothes that are too loose to prevent injuries as they can get snagged on doorknobs and larger items.

Tip #5: Leave out some cleaning supplies

After all your furniture leaves your home, it may look a little dirty even if you regularly clean it. You’ll probably need to do a little vacuuming or dusting, especially where your furniture used to be.

Plus, it’s great to have cleaning supplies available to you when moving into your new home in case there’s anything you want to tidy up!

Tip #6: Pack a cooler

It’s going to be a long day, and you’ll likely not have access to snacks and drinks that would usually be available in your refrigerator. During your breaks, you can get a snack and drink of water from the cooler — it’s crucial that you stay hydrated!

Follow these tips for success

We know that moving day can be overwhelming, but with these moving day tips, the process will be as stress-free as possible. Don’t forget that it’s an exciting day—you’re moving into your new home!
